Another shooting took place in the neighboring city of Alhambra, where an armed man entered a dance hall, was disarmed by those inside, and fled. The authorities later surrounded a white van in Torrance, about 30 miles from Monterey Park, believing it to be connected to the shooting, but it is unclear what was found inside. The shooting took place at a building on West Garvey Avenue on the eve of the Lunar New Year, which is a major holiday in many Asian communities.
